Abstract

The serum proteins in normal and abnormal conditions have been measured after separation by electrophoresis in both starch gel and on cellulose acetate. The difficulties of establishing a normal range for the starch gel values have been discussed. An electrophoretic method for differentiating macroglobulins from paraproteins and very raised γ-globulin has been described. It was found to be more reliable than visual comparison of electrophoretic patterns. Cryoglobulins are more likely to be suspected by electrophoresis on cellulose acetate than in starch gel. For the patients with myelomatosis, idiopathic paraproteinaemia and a miscellaneous group with raised γ-globulins, both electrophoretic methods were equally reliable for diagnostic purposes and gave similar information.
