Abstract
Suckler cows from the hills and uplands are generally of traditional type. The introduction of new continental genotypes into a hill environment could have the potential to increase output and produce carcasses of high quality. The objective of this experiment was to assess the output and reproductive performance of Simmental cross Holstein/Friesian (S) and Piemontese cross Holstein/Friesian (P) suckler cows producing three-quarter bred continental progeny from an autumn calving suckler herd. Reproductive performance and calving difficulties of the first calf crop were presented previously (Keatinge et al 1994). This paper presents the growth and finishing performance of calves from S and P dams.
