Abstract

A comparison of pathogenicity towards wheat seedlings was made between isolates of Cochliobolus sativus, Curvularia ramosa, Fusarium culmorum, F. graminearum, Gaeumannomyces graminis tritici, G. graminis avenae , and Phytophthora cinnamomi . Rate of penetration, root damage, rate of growth within the roots, effect on shoot growth and mortality rate, were measured for each isolate using a mycelial inoculum of uniform size. The results were expressed on an arbitrary scale which indicated that G. graminis tritici had considerably greater ability to invade and destroy wheat seedlings than the other pathogens tested, and that P. cinnamomi was rated second in pathogenicity.
