Abstract

In this paper a comparative analysis of the stored magnetic energy in cylindrical and toroidal superconducting magnetic coils is performed. For a fair comparison, similar dimensions are used for both coils (diameter and cross section), in analytical and numerical modeling. The numerical modeling has been performed using the finite element COMSOL Multiphysics® software. The energy stored in a toroidal coil is compared with an equivalent cylindrical coil and is shown to be higher with 65% and 57% using the analytical and numerical modeling, respectively. Also, the results have highlighted an error of 21 % and 3.7% for the analytical modeling compared to the numerical modeling in case of cylindrical and toroidal magnetic coils, respectively.
