Introduction

The most important natural resource globally is water and a high priority issue for the quality of human existence is the availability of clean and safe drinking water [1] closely followed by appropriate vaccination coverage [2,3]. Access to safe drinking water can be estimated by the percentage of the population using improved drinking water sources. Of rural populations depend mainly on untreated streams, ponds and well water for drinking and daily activities (e.g. food preparations, bathing, laundry, etc.). This is due to inaccessibility to safe and quality treated water supplies. In such areas, streams or river-dumping have been a major means of waste disposal, causing these water sources to become repositories of household wastes, animal manure, human faces and community wastewater.
