It is commonly used to treat episodic and chronic constipation, as well as neurogenic bowel dysfunction, and as part of bowel preparation before medical procedures such as a colonoscopy. It has a dual prokinetic and secretory activity and must be converted in the stomach into the active metabolite bis-( p-hydroxyphenyl)-pyridyl2-methane (BHPM) to generate the intended laxative effect. Bisacodyl operates locally in the large bowel by directly improving motility, decreasing transit time, and raising stool water content.
