Abstract
Objective To evaluate histomorphologic characteristics of thyroid carcinomas and adenomas. Study Design Tissue sections from 30 papillary thyroid carcinomas and 8 thyroid adenomas were obtained. Full extensions of slides were evaluated at 40 x, 100 x and 400 x. Histomorphologic characteristics were analyzed with hematoxylin and eosin (HE P = .043). Concerning to encapsulation, absent or mild infiltrate was related to presence of capsule (13/56.5%) and moderate/intense associated to absence of capsule (4/100%; P = .037). Conclusions Thyroid carcinomas and adenomas exhibited variations concerning to stromal density, distribution, and intensity of inflammatory infiltrate. Additionally, there were differences in the inflammatory responses associated with histologic variants of carcinomas.
