Abstract

1.1. The total blood iron, plasma iron, hemoglobin, and inorganic phosphate blood levels were estimated in mothers, after they were delivered, and in their newborn infants. Packed-cell volume and total erythrocyte counts were also noted.2.2. Inorganic phosphate levels in the mother and in the newborn were 4.1 ± 1.3 mg. per 100 ml. of blood and 1.6 ± 0.85 mg. per 100 ml. of blood, respectively. Hemoglobin levels in the mother and the newborn were 11.4 ± 2.9 Gm. per 100 ml. of blood and 16.8 ± 3.1 Gm. per 100 ml. of blood, respectively. Total blood iron and plasma iron levels in the mothers and infants were 38.8 ± 4.5 mg. per 100 ml. of blood and 328 ± 47 μg per 100 ml. of plasma 57.6 ± 8.9 mg. per 100 ml. of blood and 152 ± 26 μg per 100 ml. of plasma, respectively. The packed-cell volume in the mothers was 4.15 ± 0.53 and in the newborn, 5.7 ± 0.61 million per mm.3 of blood.3.3. No possible interrelationship of iron and phosphate metabolism during parturition in mother and newborn infant was noted.
