Abstract
The omasum of 50 adult sheep (Madras Red Cross) and 50 adult Desi goats (of similar body size in each group) was collected from the local slaughter house. Different parameters (greater curvature, lesser curvature, weight and volume of the organ), in addition to various gross anatomical features, were studied. Difference in weight (19.6 g) and volume (19.52 ml) of the omasum between the two species was highly significant ( P < 0.01); the omasum of sheep being heavier and having a greater volume. There was no correlation between these parameters in sheep or goats. A definite and constant sequence of laminae was found in sheep and goats. The advantage of such a sequence is discussed. Different anatomical features of the laminae and papillae studding them have been related functionally. Relevance of the classification of laminae by thickness and position of their pedunculated bases of the various orders of the laminae has been confirmed.
