Abstract

The frequency of Stein-Leventhal syndrome associated with hyperprolactinemia is about 15-42%. This fact makes it important to determine the most effective method of treatment with the aim of improving fertility. Eighty-four patients with Stein-Leventhal syndrome and elevated prolactin levels were treated in the Gynaecological Center during 1992-1993. After the diagnosis confirmation treatment was carried out in three groups: 1. Diathermocauterization of ovaries-26 (30.9%); by making 6-8 parallel resections of ovarian tissue to the ovary portal, to a depth of 1 cm. by means of point electrode. 2. Thirty patients (35.7%) received Parlodel twice a day with total dosage of 2.5-5 mg a day, during 1 to 6 months, depending on the time necessary for normalization of prolactin level in blood. 3. Twenty-eight patients (33.3%) underwent diathermocauterization of ovaries followed by Parlodel treatment. After diathermocauterization seven patients (26.9%) showed resumption of menstrual function. Two (7.6%) conceived. After Parlodel treatment: 17 (56.6%) resumed menses and 8 (26.6%) conceived. After combined treatment: 21 (75%) resumed menses and 17 (60.7%) conceived. The investigations carried out revealed diathermocauterization of ovaries combined with Parlodel treatment to be the most effective method for treatment of Stein-Leventhal syndrome.
