Abstract
The qualitative and quantitative variations In the perlphytlc assemblages of a freshwater lake In South India during 1981-1982 are presented, with comparative reference to the net plankton. With higher settlement in the surface waters, the average percentage composition ofalgal and animal fractions in the periphyton were 82.60 and 17.40 respectively. The corresponding values in the subsurface level were 70.90 and 29.10, with diatoms, green algae and protozoans forming the major groups. The study brought out the trophic significance of the periphytic community in the lake with low phytoplankton production composition (34.62%).
