Abstract

The histochemistry of adult and immature Fasciola hepatica was studied, using techniques for the demonstration of lipid, hydrolytic, and oxidative enzymes. Adult F. hepatica showed the presence of lipid, alkaline and acid phosphatases, succinic dehydrogenase, DPNH and TPNH tetrazolium reductases, cytochrome oxidase, lactate dehydrogenase, and glutamate dehydrogenase. Immature F. hepatica aged 3 and 5 weeks contained more lipid, but showed no detectable cytochrome oxidase or glutamate dehydrogenase activity. Enzyme histochemical methods for nonspecific esterase, leucine aminopeptidase and glucose 6-phosphatase gave negative results with sections of adult and immature F. hepatica.
