Abstract

Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis was used to assess similarities and differences between strains and species ofCandida. The profiles of total soluble proteins and the relative mobilities of individual enzymes («zymograms») were examined. The two approaches agreed well. Different species gave dissimilar protein profiles and showed consistent differences in zymograms. In some cases, strains within a species also differed by all the criteria employed. The use of gel electrophoresis as an adjunct to more standard methods of yeast classification is discussed.
