Abstract

Although Dr. Jane Sands Robb is classified officially as a pharmacologist, this monumental work entitled Comparative Basic Cardiology indicates that she is a biologist at heart and very familiar with the morphology and the physiology of the cardiovascular system throughout the animal kingdom. It was not her intention to write a new textbook, but to collect all the available information concerning gross anatomy, embryology, electron-microscopy, histochemistry, and electrophysiology of the hearts of different species. After studying the book carefully, I realized that she accomplished her intended purpose admirably and covered even a broader field than one expected. What astonished me most was that Dr. Robb succeeded in making her book much more readable than other books containing a collection of information or than the majority of review articles.
