Comparative Basic Cardiology.

Abstract

Although Dr. Jane Sands Robb is classified officially as a pharmacologist, this monumental work entitled Comparative Basic Cardiology indicates that she is a biologist at heart and very familiar with the morphology and the physiology of the cardiovascular system throughout the animal kingdom. It was not her intention to write a new textbook, but to collect all the available information concerning gross anatomy, embryology, electron-microscopy, histochemistry, and electrophysiology of the hearts of different species. After studying the book carefully, I realized that she accomplished her intended purpose admirably and covered even a broader field than one expected. What astonished me most was that Dr. Robb succeeded in making her book much more readable than other books containing a collection of information or than the majority of review articles. She accomplished this partly by not only enumerating the bare facts reported in certain citations, but by including verbal quotations of different
