Abstract

Methods We estimated the 10-year coronary risk in a sample of Spanish outpatients in our HIV clinic, using the standard Framingham index and an index developed and validated in a population of Catalonia (Northern Spain): REGICOR. The following data were collected in all patients: age, gender, smoking status, HIV risk group, CD4+ cell count, HIV viral load, fasting glucose and insulin levels, lipid profile, blood pressure, waist circumference, BMI and present ART. We used the HOMA (homeostatic model assessment) index to assess insulin resistance, choosing as cut-off point, 3.8. The IDF (International Diabetes Foundation) criteria have been used to define increased waist circumference, hypertension, hypertrygliceridemia, low HDL-cholesterol and hyperglycemia.

  • Using the REGICOR index, estimated 10-year coronary heart disease (CHD) risk greater than 5% was 3.3 times lower than by Framingham index (14.2% vs. 46.9%)
