Abstract

Abstract The present work explores the leaching of 12 heavy metal from Coal Fly Ash Brick (CFAB) and Clay Brick (CB) samples collected from Badarpur and Khaperkheda Thermal Power Plant (TPP) using batch and column leaching tests. The batch leaching test was performed fallowing standard procedure of WET, TCLP, SPLP and DWLP, and the column leaching studies were done at pH 4 and 7. The study also focuses on the comparative assessment of heavy metal leaching from collected samples. Results of both batch and column leaching experiments showed that the concentration of leached heavy metals was within the limit specified by Bureau of Indian Standard IS-10500:2012. It was observed that the heavy metals concentration leached in batch leaching experiments were comparatively more than column experiments. The study supports the use of Coal Fly Ash (CFA) during bricks manufacturing as there were minimum leaching observed from CFAB compared to CB.
