Abstract

A direct antimicrobial evaluation over 6 hours compared three soft contact lens disinfection solutions: AOSept ® Disinfection/Neutralization Solution with AODISC ® present (CIBA Vision), ReNu ® Cleaning, Rinsing, and Disinfection Solution (Bausch & Lomb), and Opti-Free ™ Rinsing, Disinfection, and Storage Solution (Alcon). The test microorganisms were ATCC strains of the bacteria and fungi recommended by the FDA guidelines for evaluation of soft contact lens disinfection solutions: Aspergillus fumigatus, Candida albicans, Serratia marcescens, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus epidermis. Inocula of 10 4 colony-forming units per milliliter were tested in 10 ml aliquots of each test solution. Samples of the test solutions were taken at 2, 4, and 6 hours, and average counts of each microbe at these time points were compared. AOSept, with an AODISC present, was more effective overall in killing the test organisms than either ReNu or Opti-Free.
