Abstract

The authors examined the possibilities of using an automated system of calculated strength and cracking resistance in comparative analysis of the load-carrying capacity of sections of metal structures. Such a system, which also includes as a compound part a program for finite-element calculations, is fitted with additional functions to produced models of new variants of design and compare the results of several calculations. The optimum variant of the structure is selected from a set of information presented in the graphical and/or digital form. The values of nominal stresses in main loading-carrying elements of components, the characteristics reflecting the stiffness of the structure (or its sections), and the coefficient of exhaustion of the load-carrying capacity are used. The latter parameter is a universal characteristic calculated from different criteria of the fracture mechanics and conventional strength theories. Examples are presented of comparative analysis of the load-carrying capacity of a beam of a bridge crane for which three-dimensional finite element models are constructed.
