Abstract

The multifunctional non-structural protein 1 (NS1) of influenza A virus is responsible for several viral functions including the enhancement of viral protein synthesis and suppression of the host immune response. NS1 has two globular domains, an RNA binding domain (RBD) and an effector domain (ED), which are separated by a linker region. NS1 forms higher-order structures through forming one type of RBD homodimer and two types of ED homodimers. The oligomeric state of NS1 has been suggested to determine its function during different infection cycles.
