Abstract

The main aim of this paper is to compare and analyze the performance of scalar control, field-oriented control, and direct torque control implemented on symmetrical six-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor. Firstly, mathematical model of symmetrical six-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor is developed using vector space decomposition (VSD) approach. Secondly, the working principle of each control technique has been illustrated and developed, which is then implemented on the motor model using six-phase inverter. Scalar control technique is implemented by varying voltage and frequency in equivalent to the required speed. FOC uses sinusoidal pulse width modulation technique (SPWM) with PI current controllers and DTC uses hysteresis controllers with voltage vectors generation to achieve the required response. The performance comparison of these control techniques is based on starting response, steady-state response and dynamic response, and then presenting the merits and demerits of these techniques, which is important in the selection of optimal control technique for the PMSM motor in HEV/EV applications. Mathematical modeling, analysis, and simulation of the control techniques on six-phase PMSM are carried out using MATLAB/Simulink.
