Abstract

Summary - Comparison of natural ectomycorrhizae between beech (Fagus sylvatica) and two fungi (Lactarius blennius var viridis and Lactarius subdulcis). III. Rhizomorphs. Lactarius blennius var viridis and Lactarius subdulcis form smooth ectomycorrhizas with beech roots. Rhizomorphs were observed on both mycorrhizas. Different hyphae were present in rhizomorphs: dead small hyphae with very thick electron-dense walls and alive hyphae showing relatively large diameter and walls less thick than the others. These morphological differences could be in relationship with the functional activity of hyphae: the alive hyphae revealed an accumulation of glycogen, while the dead hyphae facilited and canalized water and nutriments brought to the mycorrhizas. rhizomorphs / ectomycorrhizas / Lactarius / ultrastructure
