Abstract

BackgroundBarrett's esophagus (BE) is a condition in which the esophageal squamous epithelium is changed by specialised columnar epithelium as a result of gastroesophageal reflux. The diagnosis is suspected by endoscopy and confirmed by histopathological examination of biopsies. The aim of this study was to compare endoscopic diagnosis with histopathological diagnosis of patients with suspected Barrett's. Material and methodsRetrospective study with patients referred to a single tertiary center. ResultsWe included 19 patients with endoscopic biopsies for suspected BE, of which 11 were women and 8 were men. We reviewed the histopathological reports, finding agreement on the diagnosis of BE in 10 patients (52.63%). ConclusionsThe study shows that the best method of diagnosis is histological examination of suspicious BE lesions. We overdiagnosed Barrett's Esophagus, which is preferable to ignoring precursor lesions of neoplasia.
