Abstract

Abstract Since the beginning of the 20th century Brazilian interests and powerful international groups have struggled for control over Brazil's immense iron ore fields. In this article Maria Clara Couto Soares analyses the emergence of Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD) and its importance in the Brazilian efforts to create an integrated national iron and steel industry as a basis for economic development.
