Abstract

Most wastes produced around the world are from agricultural, industrial and chemical sectors in which most are biodegradable, hence they do not pose a threat to our environment while disposal. But few wastes are nonbiodegradable which stay in our environment for more than decades. Hence, proper measures should be taken to dispose these kinds of wastes by which they do not provide hindrance our environment. This study uses waste produced from scrap tires with two types of soils collected from Kancheepuram district. The rubber particles used in this study range from 75 to 425 micron at percentages of 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20%. It was observed that the maximum dry density reduces with the increment in percentage of rubber. There was reduction in optimum moisture content with the increase in rubber % due to the nonabsorbent nature of the rubber particles. From the strength tests, it was found that 10% crumb rubber was chosen as the optimum and disposal of rubber waste in clay is more recommended than in silty soil. This method can be used to effectively dispose rubber waste along with soil as filler material in various structures like highway subgrades, backfill in retaining structures and in embankments with large heights.
