Abstract

A compact wideband gain-agile receiving filtenna is presented. The receiving filtenna is a co-design, which is organically combined by a compact passive filtenna and a variable gain amplifier (VGA) circuit. In the design, the active feeding network consists of one VGA circuit and two feeding strips connected by a metal post. Its gain-agile is empowered by varying the feeding DC voltage values of the VGA circuit. A prototype was fabricated, assembled, and tested. It has a compact overall size: 0.48 λ 0 × 0.325 λ 0 × 0.056 λ 0 . The measurement results demonstrate that, by regulating the voltage values from 0 V to 3 V, the proposed receiving filtenna can achieve an average active gain varying from 21.34 dBi to −19.77 dBi with a 3-dB gain value fluctuation within the pass-band 860-1070 MHz (21.76%). Moreover, in every case, the receiving filtenna exhibits both the excellent impedance matching (|S 11 | 140 dB) within the passband, and good out-of-band rejection performance at two edges (Selectivity ≥ 170 dB/GHz).
