Abstract

This paper presents a design of compact tri-band F-shaped slot antenna using complementary split ring resonator (CSRR) for Mobile and Wireless Local Area (WLAN) applications. The aim of this paper is to design a very small-profile antenna (27.48×26.59mm2) or 0.08λ0× 0.08λ0 (λ0 = 900 MHz) that can operate in tri-band frequency ranges around 900MHz, 1800MHz and 2.4GHz. By etching F-shaped slots on each radiator side of rectangular-patch antenna on circular-shaped ground plane, a tri-band antenna can be achieved and the operation frequencies can be tuned via the F-shape slot geometry. Furthermore, a concept of CSRR ( two-dimensional artificial structure) is applied on the circular-shaped ground plane by forming complementary split ring resonators on the copper surface. With this structure, the values of permittivity (f) and permeability (μ) can be negative at the designed frequencies and consequently the size of antenna could be significantly reduced. The antenna is designed using the time domain CST Microwave Studio ( MWS) simulator. Finally, the designed antenna is fabricated and the experimental result of S11 is compared with the simulation results for validation.
