Abstract

A modified mushroom-like electromagnetic band gap (EBG) structure with wider band gap, and compact size is proposed. The paper presents design parametric study, perfect magnetic conductor (PMC) behavior, scalability, band gap behavior, and applications of the proposed EBG structure. The special texture on EBG patch is used to achieve wider band gap and compact size. The method of suspended transmission line technique (STLT) is used to investigate the band gap behavior. It is observed that the proposed EBG with very compact size of 25.8×25.8mm2 has wider band gap (S21<; -10, -20 dB), than mushroom-like EBG structure. The proposed EBG structure is scalable and stable over a wide range of frequencies. The designed EBG structure is integrated with a 2 × 2 microstrip patch antenna array designed for X-band applications. It has been observed that, antenna parameters such as gain, directivity, and side lobe level are significantly improved. The structure is well suited to space and weight limited structures such as aircrafts and missiles, due to its compact size, conformability and robustness.
