Abstract

In this article, a compact dual-port single element MIMO antenna is presented for millimeter wave (mmWave) 5G wireless applications. The presented antenna design consists of an annular ring slot that is fed by a Substrate Integrated Waveguide (SIW) at the two opposite sides of the substrate. The antenna resonates at 28GHz and its 10dB impedance bandwidth is 400MHz. The isolation between the ports is reduced by introducing additional annular slot that acts as a cavity which results in an isolation better than 20dB at 28GHz. The measured gain of both ports are 6.9 dBi which is the highest gain per unit element at 28GHz in the literature. The measured diversity gain and envelope correlation coefficient are 9.98dB and 0.065, respectively, at the band of interest. The measured and simulated results are in good agreement.

INTRODUCTION

I N order to meet the demands for high data rates, millimeter wave (mmWave) radio frequency bands have been considered in the fifth-generation (5G) communication systems [1], [2]. Usman et al.: Compact SIW fed Dual-Port Single Element Annular Slot MIMO Antenna advantages from easy design and compact size to high power and ability to be integrated with other electronic devices. In [14] an SIW fed tapered slot MIMO antenna is proposed covering 24.25–27.5 GHz, and the 27.5–28.35 GHz 5G bands. The proposed antenna operates at 27.7 GHz band with port isolation better than 27 dB. Peak gain of 10 dBi has been achieved at 28 GHz. MIMO performance of the proposed antenna has been evaluated in terms of ECC, which is measured to be close to zero. In this paper an SIW fed single element, dual-port MIMO distorted annular ring slot antenna with high isolation for 28 GHz 5G band is proposed. To the best of authors’ knowledge, this dual-port, single element antenna has the highest isolation and highest gain per unit element in the literature with the smallest size
