Abstract
New phosphor technologies, developed in the 70s, the recent development of new glass welding techniques, and the sharp rise in energy costs, opened the way to the development of a single-ended compact fluorescent lamp family. These real energy saving lamps with higher initial costs but lower energy costs result in lower lighting costs than is the case for inexpensive, low efficiency light sources such as incandescent lamps. The relatively low heat production per lumen and the flat geometry of this new so-called PL lamp family, makes a totally new approach to residential lighting possible. It is the object of this paper to discuss some important performance and application aspects of the PL lamp family.
