Abstract

The Forward Hadron Calorimeter (FHCal) in the MPD experiment detects protons and neutrons in the energy range of 1–5 GeV. The FHCal consists of two identical arms placed on the left/right sides from the beam collision point. Since the calorimeter will operate inside the superconducting magnet with limited available space its full length is only about one meter or 4 interaction lengths. Nevertheless, it reliably detects energies up to 5 GeV. The calorimeter has both transverse and longitudinal segmentations. The results of the beam tests confirmed the reliable detection of low energy protons. Longitudinal hadron shower profiles and amplitude spectra for different active lengths of the calorimeter are presented.
