Abstract
Compact spectrometers are one of important building blocks needed in implementing optical lab-on-a-chip sensing devices. Photonic crystals due to their unique and strong dispersive properties are proper candidates for realizing such integrated spectrometers. We use a combination of three unique dispersion properties of photonic crystals, i.e., superprism effect, negative diffraction, and negative refraction, to implement a compact integrated spectrometer that isolates signal from stray light and can be used in sensing applications.
