Abstract It is shown that the recently discovered compact nonthermal radio source in M87 may give rise to a powerful X-ray source through the Compton effect. It is also suggested that the evidence for small optical structures in the jet may indicate that the optical radiation and some of the X-ray flux comes from electrons and magnetic fields generated in small dense pulsar-like objects which have been ejected from the nucleus of the galaxy.
