Abstract

ABSTRACTA compact beamforming antenna with multiple radiation pattern reconfigurations is presented for 2.4 GHz wireless MIMO applications. The proposed antenna comprises four pairs of active elements and parasitic elements loaded PIN diodes. The size of the antenna is 0.144λ0 × 0.144λ0 × 0.8λ0, indicating a very compact design. By switching PIN diodes, the parasitic element performs as a director or a reflector, and the impedance matching and the radiation patterns of the antenna are optimized. The performance of the antenna is verified by experimental data obtained from fabrication and measurement. The antenna offers three modes with nine radiation beam patterns at the frequencies of 2.4 GHz band. The measured peak gain of all beam patterns ranges from 4.1 to 6.9 dBi.© 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 58:2755–2760, 2016
