Abstract

In this work, a compact, multiband and reconfigurable MIMO antenna for wireless systems is designed and presented. The antenna element is composed of three open-end quarter-wave slots fed by proximity coupling via a 50 ohms microstrip feed line. The total area of the MIMO antenna is 24 x 25 mm 2 . For the decoupling mechanism, T-shaped and vertical slots are embedded between the two elements of the antenna. As a result, the MIMO antenna achieves a maximum isolation of 25 dB (15 dB of improvement), 12.5 dB (4.5 dB of improvement) and 35 dB (15 dB of improvement) at frequencies of 2.4 GHz, 3.5 GHz and 5.25 GHz, respectively. In addition, the envelope correlation coefficient (ECC) is less than 0.02 and the gain diversity (DG) is more than 9.9 for the three considered operating bands. The proposed reconfigurable antenna can be switched between simple, dual and triple band modes, which is a good candidate for use in cognitive radios and wireless systems.
