Abstract

The present study examines the incidence of substance use and mental illness among jail inmates by analyzing differences and similarities in demographic characteristics and detention status with a standard operational definition of mental illness and substance use. The sample consisted of a total of 5,785 subjects from 407 jails in the United States. The current study used the Survey of Inmates of Local Jails. 1983: (United States) from the Bureau of Justice Statistics (1985). Significant associations were found between membership in one of the substance use and/or mental illness categories and variables reflecting subjects' demographic, socioeconomic, and sentence status. There is a need to utilize standardized instruments that assess both substance use and mental illness in jails.
