Abstract

The commuting patterns of 12 Soviet Georgian towns are analyzed on the basis of personnel data (including place of residence) gathered in the field in the towns' industrial enterprises and service establishments. The data are used to construct commuting flows, calculate commuting intensity (number of commuters in relation to town population), the percentage of commuters in the town work force and the extent of the commuting area, including a tributary area index indicating the number of commuters generated in relation to the population of the tributary area. Time spent in commuting and the occupational structure of commuters are also analyzed, and a typology of towns based on commuter patterns is constructed.
