Abstract

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is now one of China’s most important strategic partners in the Arabian Gulf in particular and the Middle East at large. The strengthening China–UAE bilateral ties have drawn much scholarly attention. Policy briefings and think tank reports largely focus on trade, energy, and security issues. The exponential growth of the overseas Chinese community in the UAE has caught many by surprise, yet there is little systematic research on the state of the community, its relations with UAE society, and its transnational ties. This chapter provides an overview of the Chinese community in the UAE. Beginning with a recount of the history of Chinese migration into the Arabian Gulf and a spatial analysis of the Chinese presence in the UAE, the chapter examines the institutional development and community-building within UAE’s Chinese expatriate community and explores the potential of the community to bolster China’s soft power in the region and beyond.
