Abstract

The improvement of community-based disaster risk reduction (DRR) at Balerante Village is able to create resilience in case of Merapi eruption and to identify strength, weakness, opportunity and threat at local level. This study aims to find out, understand, explain, analyze and gain conception in regard to communitybased DRR efforts. The research applies a naturalistic qualitative approach combining comprehensive description and exhaustive insights related to existing processes. Data is collected through interview, observation and recording in assimilative, naturalistic and impartial ways. SWOT analysis is used to analyze strength, weakness, opportunity and threat to find out appropriate DRR strategy. The finding highlights community experiences to contribute better awareness towards future disaster. Community improves the capacity in some aspects i.e. partnership, governance, communication system, data management and the betterment of disaster recovery depending on local community empowerment. The ideal strategy represents the collaboration within local community and government alongside respective roles to avoid overlap implementation.
