Abstract

The ichthyoplankton community occurring off sandy beaches in Algoa Bay, South Africa, is described from results of a two year survey. Quantitative samples were collected off Sundays River Beach, Coega Beach and Kings Beach using a 1,5m diameter plankton net with a mesh size of 500 um. Larvae of numerous fish species were found to occur in the plankton and the pelagic species Engraulis capensis, Etrumeus teres and Sardinop ocellata were often numerically dominant. Various species of Gobiidae, Blenniidae, Sparidae, Sciaenidae and Soleidae were also regularly encountered in the plankton. During the summer months ichthyoplankton was more abundant than in wi nt.e r and densities o f up to four fish larvae m-3 were recorded.
