Abstract

What is the role of community organizations in urban regeneration? Based on a case study of Coin Street, on London's South Bank, Tim Brindley gives an outline of the Coin Street story over some 25 years, identifying the respective roles of community groups, local and central government, quangos and the private corporate sector in planning, urban design, development and partnerships. Events on the South Bank illustrate the changing urban policy agenda from the 1970s to the present day, showing how the shift to partnership has brought with it new definitions of urban policy goals, in respect of community, development and regeneration. In conclusion, some alternative scenarios for the future of Coin Street and the South Bank are considered.
