Abstract

A survey has been conducted to assess the reaction of communities exposed to impulse noise. Three communities were selected in different cities of Ontario, where significant numbers of people are exposed to impulse noise of a particular type—that produced by the operation of drop forges. Approximately 600 interviews were completed on a double-blind basis using a specially constructed questionnaire. The noise environment in the survey areas was established by analog and digital monitoring. Analysis of the data indicates significant correlation between disturbance responses and the measured impulse noise level. A wide range of noise descriptors have been tested, including impulse level measured with slow, fast, and impulse response, equivalent sound level, percentile levels, and level above ambient. Multiple-regression analysis has been carried out to investigate the effect of independent variables such as income, age, education, etc.
