Community Radio in India: An Information and Communication Technology Tool for Participatory Development

Abstract

Human beings live in society where they thrive and flourish by satisfying their needs. Their mutual interaction enables them to exist. There are several mediums of communication and among those radio is a potent means. Community radio movement has gradually emerged as an influential means impacting social life of communities. Community radio is usually a non-profit mechanism with the broad aim of promoting community welfare and development. Community radio services are immensely beneficial for both individual and community. There are provisions in several international agreements promoting community radio broadcasting. Community radio service is popular throughout the world. There has been a gradual development of community radio services in India. There are at present about 200 community radio stations located in various states of the country. There are several community radio stations which are doing commendable tasks and producing discernible impact. An assessment of community radio services in India shows that these services are still in a stage of infancy and they need to go much far ahead, if they really want to make noticeable effects on the society. If the community radio services have to be really beneficial then sincere, true and optimistic intentions and functional efforts are needed.
