Abstract

Introduction: Public perceptions of injury risk in rugby union are contentious, vary widely and tend to focus on concerns about player safety. There has long been debate about acceptability of risk of spinal cord injury (SCI) in the sport, despite low incidence rates. Public commentary has the potential to influence participation rates and behaviours within the sport. By identifying and understanding community attitudes, beliefs and potentially misunderstandings or misinformation, efforts to address safety concerns can be made.
