Abstract

This case concerns the community engagement practice of JOC Petroleum (JOC), a company that has been operating in the south of Sudan since year 2001. In 2011, the newly formed Republic of South Sudan declared ‘Development and Equitable Sharing of Wealth Guiding Principles’ for all its oil and gas investors, through which community development projects are now considered as a legal requirement. Such development has prompted JOC to review its community engagement practices, particularly in terms of its compliance with the present regulatory and societal expectations. This case concerns transformation in community engagement practices as a response towards a regulatory change in order to sustain the organisation’s legitimacy.
