Community Capacity Building in Tourism Development in Local Communities

Abstract

This study articulates the summary of the thesis which explored levels of community capacity building (CCB) that contributed to tourism development in local communities. The study also provides an overall review of the research objectives, findings, conclusions. The emphasis of this study, however, is on meeting the final objective of the study, namely to formulate principles and guidelines and recommend approaches that can be applied to the development of tourism in Shiraz city, and to create the basis necessary for good practice for any local community toward tourism development projects. The current study begins by summarizing the background to the research, the research objectives, methodology and findings. The researcher goes on to make explicit the contribution of this study to the discipline of tourism development management in local communities of Shiraz and Iran. Suggestions are made for future research based on the theme of this study. The suggestions also provided for enhancing development of building community for tourism.

When comparing the three levels of capacity building (CCB) descriptively, the results show a high level of CCB in individual level for tourism development
There are several studies which discuss the construct of CCB, in health promotions and agriculture, there seems a very few studies that discuss the CCB in the context of community tourism development

Introduction

Community residents to participate in tourism activities. One important aim of CCB is to verify whether individuals, organizations and communities have been building their capacity for development of tourism in their communities. Tourism development in local communities cannot be successful without the participation of community leaders and community residents. In the case of tourism development in local communities cannot be successful without participation of community leaders and community residents. In the case of study area, Shiraz has a lot of prospects in building various forms of tourism activities. In the absence of community participation, tourism industry in Shiraz is not likely to improve (Aref & Ma’rof, 2008). Understanding how CCB could develop tourism in local communities is fundamental to continued successful tourism development projects. Assessing the level of CCB is an important step in developing community strategies for achieving community development (Marre & Weber, 2007)
