Introduction

Aquatic Resource Development and Quality Improvement project (ARDQIP) of the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development of Sri Lanka, which was in operation during 2003-2010 period, implemented several activities aimed at enhancing fish seed production of the country. Under ARDQIP, 25 community-based mini-nurseries were established in 10 districts during 2004-2007 period (ARDQIP 2010), to demonstrate profitability of fish seed production and to motivate rural communities to get involved in fry-tofingerling rearing apart from meeting the fingerling requirement especially for the development of culture-based fisheries. Two mini-nurseries were established at Kirawana and Rajawewa in the Ampara district of the Eastern province of Sri Lanka.
