Abstract

Mr. JENSEN received his Ph.D. in American Studies from Yale University in 1966. Presently Professor of History and Sociology at the University of Illinois, Chicago Circle, he also holds the positions of Director of the University's Office of Social and Demographic History and Director of the Family and Community History Center, Newberry Library. The recipient of numerous research grants and a member of the editorial boards of several scholarly journals, Professor Jensen is the author of many articles and books, among them The Winning of the Midwest: Social and Political Conflict, 1888-1896 and the soon to be published Illinois: A Bicentennial History. Ms. CAMPBELL, a Ph.D. candidate in American history at the University of North Carolina, is currently Assistant Director and Research Associate of the Family and Community History Center at the Newberry Library. Her chief teaching and research interests are in the areas of the American family, women's, quantitative, and social history; she is the author of several scholarly articles and is writing the history of American women during the 1940's. A preliminary version of this paper was presented at the Workshop on Local Studies and Experiential Learning, George Washington University, April 22-23, 1977.
