Abstract

No attempt will be made within the short compass of this chapter to provide a compendious review of developments and changes which have characterised the US telecommunications policy sector in the twentieth century. Such material is readily available elsewhere.1 However, before attempting to outline and analyse contemporary developments in the wake of deregulation and divestiture we will remind readers of the ‘significant events’ which have punctuated twentieth-century history of US telecommunications with specific reference to the field of ‘common carrier’.2 (A full history of the deregulating measures is provided in Chapter 9.)
