Abstract

ABSTRACT This article argues that Communist sport, by its competitive nature, and by its attention to integrative political functioning, has set up an infrastructure which is capable of changing the cognitive style of the large Cuban rural population. The article begins by giving a brief history of urban development in Cuba, in order to illustrate the nature of the problems. It then reviews the literature on cognitive style in order to illustrate that competitive sport, when adapted to the young, appears to have the potential to promote a field dependency cognitive style, a perceptual mode that is ideologically suitable to a socialist state. The article then briefly discusses the ideological function of Communist sport with respect to societal development, taking examples from East Germany and the Soviet Union to illustrate how function and structure have rejected ideology.
