Abstract
Abstract In the twentieth century, communist revolutions drawing on Marxist ideas of social transformation became popular in developing countries hoping to “leap” into modernity. However, such revolutions often delivered harsh authoritarian government along with economic development. Moreover, while some countries did industrialize and grow after communist revolutions, like Russia and China, they also suffered episodes of famine and war with high death tolls. Some communist revolutions, like that of Cuba, even failed to deliver strong economic growth.
